The game tells the tale of Fireboy and Watergirl, who are left behind in the forest temple and must navigate their way quickly through 32 challenging stages. Each game level is an adventure puzzle that calls for two players to handle the two adorable characters while paying close attention to one another. You have to move things, push buttons and pull levers, jump over obstacles, and jump from one ramp to another.

Do not combine fire and water. The Fireboy may safely walk on lava but must avoid water pools. The Watergirl can't be injured by water and must jump across lava puddles. Both characters must avoid green wetlands.

To complete each level, cooperation between the two players is essential. Levers to operate lifts and gates are located along each level. One of the players has the ability to move the levers, and once moved, they stay put. In contrast to levers, buttons must be held down to operate other items throughout the stages. Sometimes, one player presses the button as the other enters the elevator. Boxes should occasionally be put closer to ramps so they can be used as high ground to climb over when climbing them. Be careful not to push boxes the wrong way when doing so. It is impossible to push back boxes that are too close to a wall; the only option is to restart the entire level.

Fireboy and Watergirl must get to the exit doors and stand there in order to finish a level. To reach the level's top rank, collect every blue and red diamond. In order to achieve the maximum rating on each level, time is also crucial. Keep an eye on the timer at the top of the screen and work to achieve the fastest time.
